Description

Gov2u participated at the 2009 National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL)

Gov2u participated at the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) that hosted its 35th annual Legislative Summit from July 20-24 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, USA. Vasilis Koulolias, Executive Director of Gov2u, took part as a speaker in a session entitled "International Legislative Best Practices" on Tuesday, July 21st from 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Gov2u also participated at the NCSL 2009 with a booth at the Conference Exhibition.

With over 5,000 attendees and over 200 international delegates from 22 countries in attendance, a welcoming committee moderated by Former Delegate Stone marked the launch of the week. Held Monday morning, the event highlighted the contributions, insight, and experience the international delegates brought to the Summit.

Over the next four days, the conference provided more than 150 sessions on pressing policy issues and other legislative issues. A general international agenda included a number of events focused on global issues, such as "Communicating with Media Around the World" following Monday's morning welcome. After this session, "The International Economic Downturn" provided a key opportunity for domestic participants to learn how their international colleagues dealt with the economic slowdown in their own countries and legislatures.

The second day of the conference began with a general session by Bill Gates, "A Bold New Vision for Education," and was followed by the specialized "International Best Legislative Practices." During this meeting, international legislative leaders provided advice from across the globe on how to be effective in a legislature.

On Wednesday, a large session on the Economy was held, followed by a session called "Global Perspectives on Climate Change" provided a venue for information sharing on best practices and effective solutions to energy issues including tax structures, carbon emission reductions, and more.

In addition to the formal sessions of the Legislative Summit, the international delegates traveled to Trenton, New Jersey to tour the capitol building and meet with New Jersey lawmakers and staff. Friday ended the conference with a session called, "An Election, A New Direction and the Politics of Change and Health Care: Finding the Right Prescription." The week proved to be very successful and worthwhile for all in attendance.
