Reels of film on the shelf!


European film heritage is at risk with only 1.5% of it having been digitized. A major hurdle to overcome is the funding involved for production and rights clearance.

While technology constantly takes film making to the next level, it’s not only heritage film that is at risk. Also movies created at the birth of the digital era might be lost forever as well, because of formatting and interoperability issues.

And with over one million hours of film stacked away in archives, European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes says: "It is ridiculous that our film heritage is invisible in the 21st century. Culture is the heart of Europe, and film is at the heart of culture. I am determined to bring this film legacy online and will make a proposal in 2013 that helps Member States and stakeholders to join forces to get films online."

Sweden and the UK take the lead for actively securing this part of their culture while most European countries are left dragging way behind!
