[WeGov Project] Phase 2 Evaluations with the German Bundestag

Where eGovernment Meets eSociety

The WeGov team launched the Phase 2 Evaluation of the second version of the WeGov toolbox in March 2012.

WeGov is a toolset that allows policy-makers to take full advantage to be taken of a wide range of existing and well established social networking sites in order to engage citizens in two-way dialogs as part of the governance and policymaking processes. The toolset contains a number of configurable tools to search, detect, track and mine opinions and discussions on policy oriented topics on a range of social media platforms.social networking sites.

A key feature of our approach is to allow policy makers to move away from the limitations inherent in the current practice of using bespoke and dedicated platforms (e.g. specific opinion soliciting websites hosted by governments) and instead make full use of the high levels of participation and rich discussions that already take place in existing social networking communities. In short, use the platforms the citizens use already.

Testing WeGov at the Bundestag

The GESIS field trials of the second version of the WeGov toolbox started on the 16th of March 2012 with a presentation at the German Bundestag. The WeGov software solution was presented to 12 policy-makers interested in the field of social media and eGovernment/ e-Participation from the German Bundestag. The presentation was complemented with an interactive session where the policy-makers explored the WeGov software altogether.

Whilst the evaluation confirmed that further improvements need to be performed on the current WeGov toolbox before handing it to MPs for their everyday work, we are proud to announce that the group's overall feedback was really positive. The MPs particularly welcomed the option to combine analysis components, doing long term analytics on bigger data sets and visualizing results in a more intuitive way.

Meetings with the European Parliament (Gov2u field trials) and the State Parliament Nordrhein-Westfalen have been scheduled for April 2012.
