Stop ACTA - Sign the Petition today!

United for Change.

A couple of weeks ago, 3 million of us signed a petition urging US Congressmen to reject SOPA on the ground that it choked innovation and our freedom of expression. It worked. But there is an even bigger threat out there, and our global movement for freedom online is perfectly poised to make it disappear, once and for all.

ACTA -- a global treaty -- could allow corporations to censor the Internet. Negotiated in secret by a small number of rich countries and corporate powers, it would set up a shadowy new anti-counterfeiting body to allow private interests to police everything that we do online and impose massive penalties -- even prison sentences -- against people they say have harmed their business.

Europe is deciding right now whether to sign ACTA -- and without them, this global attack on Internet freedom will collapse.

Whilst some EU countries have already signed the treaty – it has to go through a vote in the EU parliament. The EU parliament is the only democratically elected institution in the EU – if you make your voice heard – they will listen!

Over a million people have already signed, keeping in mind that under the Lisbon Treaty, this is the number of signature normally required to launch a European Citizens Initiative demanding the European Commission to initiate a legislative proposal.

We know they have opposed ACTA before, but some members of Parliament are wavering -- let's give them the push they need to reject the treaty.

Be aware that the lead Parliamentarian on ACTA has resigned over the bill’s controversy. This means that MEPs are listening. Now it is time to pile on the pressure and bury the treaty for good.

To all Members of the EU Parliament:

As concerned global citizens, we call on you to stand for a free and open Internet and reject the ratification of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), which would destroy it. The Internet is a crucial tool for people around the world to exchange ideas and promote democracy. We urge you to show true global leadership and protect our rights.
