WeGov featured on Think!'s Innovation Map

WeGov on the Innovation Map

We are proud to have our WeGov Project featured as an important contribution to public services on the THINK! website.

THINK! - the Innovation Knowledge Foundation - is an international non profit think-tank whose aim is to circulate knowledge on how digital technologies can enable innovation processes and sustainable development.

Within this framework, THINK! (which, by the way, celebrated its one year of existence on November 8) is developing the Innovation Map of the most innovative developments worldwide. The Map is an interactive world map with links to a number of case studies about breakthrough innovations improving the quality of life.

For an innovation to qualify for the THINK Map, it must be in one of the 4 fields outlined in the THINK diamond:

  1. The innovation significantly increases the quality of lifein a region. Key areas in this parameter include Health and Education.
  2. The innovation is in the field of e-Government, providing an important contribution to the services a public administration provides to its citizens or a significant amelioration of the manner in which these services are provided
  3. The innovation brought about a significant increase inproductivity and competitiveness of local businesses
  4. The innovation is an important step to overcoming thedigital divide between mature, emerging and less developed economic regions

Fitting within the eGovernment category, WeGov uses ICT to improve government efficiency. The Project develops a toolset that allows full advantage to be taken of a wide range of existing and well established social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, Bebo, WordPress etc.) to engage citizens in two-way dialogs as part of governance and policymaking processes. The tools will make it possible to detect, track and mine opinions and discussions on policy oriented topics.

The tools will allow discussions to be seeded and stimulated through injection of policy discussion points into relevant communities in a secure and managed way. The tools will allow the origins, bias and evolution of opinions to be tracked to provide auditable records of provenance, guard against misuse, and ensure trust and privacy for all involved.

A key feature of our approach is to allow policy makers to move away from the limitations inherent in the current practice of using bespoke and dedicated platforms (e.g. specific opinion soliciting websites hosted by government) and instead make full use of the high levels of participation and rich discussions that already take place in existing social networking communities. In this way, WeGov Project will develop the tools and techniques for closing the loop between policy makers and the citizens.
